Common questions

How many tons of asphalt do I need?

Volume in cubic feet × 145 lb ÷ 2,000. A 50×12 ft driveway at 3" compacted takes about 10.9 tons of hot mix.

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

2–3" of compacted asphalt over 6–8" of compacted gravel base for cars; 3–4" where trucks park. The base does the structural work — asphalt over poor base fails in a couple of winters regardless of thickness.

How much does asphalt weigh?

About 145 lb per cubic foot compacted — just under 2 tons per cubic yard. Plants sell by the ton; this is why the calculator answers in tons.
