Common questions
How many pavers do I need per square foot?
Divide 144 by the paver's face area in square inches: standard 4×8 holland pavers run 4.5 per sq ft; 6×9, about 2.7; 12×12, exactly 1. The calculator does this and adds 10% for cuts and breakage — edges and curves eat pavers.
What goes under pavers?
The standard sandwich: 4" of compacted crushed stone (#57 or crusher run) for patios — 6–8" for driveways — then 1" of bedding sand screeded flat, then the pavers. Skipping or skimping the base is why paver patios heave and dip.
How much base do I need for a paver patio?
A 16×12 patio at 4" of stone needs about 3.3 tons of crushed stone plus 0.8 tons of bedding sand. The calculator scales both with your dimensions.
Should pavers be flush with the grass?
Set them about 1" above grade so water sheds and mower decks clear. Slope the whole surface 1" per 8 ft away from the house for drainage.
