What moves the price

Pavers are the labor-heavy hardscape: excavation, 4–6" of compacted base, screeded bedding sand, then every unit placed by hand. The movers: paver choice (concrete pavers anchor the range; clay brick and natural stone push the top); pattern (herringbone and circles cut more, cost more); edging and borders; and site access. The flip side of the labor cost: it's the most DIY-able hardscape — materials alone run $5–10/sq ft, and the paver calculator gives you the exact list.

Common questions

How much does a paver patio cost in 2026?

\$12–30 per square foot installed for concrete pavers — a 16×14 (224 sq ft) patio runs roughly \$2,700–\$6,700. Natural stone can double that.

Why do pavers cost more than poured concrete?

Labor: a concrete patio is one pour and finish; a paver patio is excavation, base compaction in lifts, screeding, and thousands of individual placements. You're buying craftsmanship by the piece.

Are pavers worth the premium?

Their advantages are real: no sheet cracking, individual repairability, immediate use (no cure), and generally stronger resale appeal. If the budget is tight, a smaller paver patio often beats a bigger poured one on value.

How much do I save laying pavers myself?

Half or more — materials are \$5–10/sq ft of the \$12–30 installed price. It's demanding but forgiving work: no set-time clock, mistakes lift out. The base prep is where DIY jobs succeed or fail; compact ruthlessly.
